Our featured event: The Thomas Snow Quartet on Maine Public Radio |
This year, I led a quartet with Maine native and trumpet
virtuoso Trent Austin, bassist Gerhard Graml, and drummer Ismail Lawal.
This quartet has a magical energy and really challenges me to stretch
as a musician. As some of you may already know, I have played with
Gerhard and Trent many times; those countless gigs together have given
us an excellent musical rapport and keep us as fast friends. A new
face to the quartet is my friend and colleague Ismail Lawal, a New
York native who is currently living in Boston. Ismail and I are classmates
at NEC and are both working on a Masters Degree. I have the
pleasure of playing with Ismail at least once per week at school,
and have also done a fair amount of gigs with him outside of NEC.
Ismails energy and musical communication are infectious and
it is a true joy to make music together! Although this radio broadcast
was the first time that Ismail had played with Trent and Gerhard,
our collective musical offering felt refined, sensitive, and meaningful.
The long ride from Boston to Bangor was so worthy and produced
a great show for Rich, our live audience in the studio, and the MPR
listeners statewide. Each of us had a spectacular time playing and
creating jazz! |
