This
concert, an amalgamation of Jazz, Ragtime and Mozart, was a spectacular event held at The
Pavilion in Portland, ME. Billed as "Jazz, Joplin, and The Jupiter", I joined
the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra to perform three Rags by Scott Joplin that had been
arranged for piano and orchestra. After these great arrangements, my trio performed
"Corcovado" and "East of the
Sun". I must brag about the amazing skills and beautiful playing by drummer Les
Harris, Jr. and bassist Gerhard Graml; their musical sensitivity and virtuosity made this
concert experience extraordinary!
Following the trio feature, we were joined by the Artistic Director and Conductor of the
Atlantic Chamber Orchestra Lawrence Golan. Although currently based in Colorado, Mr. Golan
was in Maine as Concertmaster for The Portland Symphony Orchestra from 1990 -2001.
Lawrence joined us in performing "Star Eyes" and "Fly Me To The Moon",
continuing with the "celestial" theme. The first half of the program closed with
my newest arrangement for Jazz trio and orchestra called the "Fall Medley". This
trilogy of Jazz standards consists of "Autumn in New York", "Night and
Day", and "Soon It's Gonna Rain".
The second half of the program
was entirely dedicated to Symphony No. 41 in C Major (K.551), the "Jupiter", by
W.A. Mozart. After rapturous applause, I joined the Orchestra for the encore, another Rag
by Scott Joplin.
The philosophy of The ACO is steeped in bringing classical music to new audiences. This
is achieved, in part, by offering concerts that feature more contemporary styles while
still exposing people to the standard repertoire. For more information about the ACO,
please visit their web site. I
also hope that you will frequently visit the sites of Les Harris and Gerhard Graml.
